Starship Troopers: Extermination is a 16-player PvE first-person shooter video game built on the Unreal Engine that's set in the Starship Troopers film universe and takes place 23 years after the original 1997 film. It launched into Early Access on Steam for PC on May 17th, 2023 and had a official full release on October 11th, 2024 for PC as well as on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X | S consoles.[1]
Overview[]
Extermination is a squad-based game that features large-scale battles against the Arachnids, with rounds lasting around 20 to 30 minutes depending on game mode and difficulty. Although primarily an online multiplayer game, it will also have a single-player mode that features Casper Van Dien reprising his role as Johnny Rico to give the player orders.[1] Players operate as a trooper in the elite Deep Space Vanguard as one of six playable classes: Sniper, Demolisher, Guardian, Engineer, Medic, and Ranger. Each class possesses a primary weapon, secondary weapon, utility item, grenade, and up to two selectable perks, with multiple options for each slot; new perks and gear unlock as players progress in the persistent class progression system.[2] Enemy Arachnid types include the Drone, Warrior Bug, Gunner Bug, Plasma Grenadier, and Tiger Elite, among others. Up to hundreds of Bugs can be on-screen at once.[3] Arachnid bodies remain persistent, which allows players to climb atop piles of Bug corpses for better vantage points.[4]
Extermination has a Titanfall-like ping system for easier player-to-player communication in the middle of a firefight, while tougher bugs will start swarming as the threat level increases. Players will need to build and maintain their own defenses – erecting walls, ammo stations, lookouts, and more.[2] These structures can only be built in pre-designated "build zones" around a Mobile HQ, using a special build tool that all classes have access to.
The developers, Offworld Industries, have stated their intent to support and develop the game over time, increasing the scope of the conflict beyond standalone matches whilst also adding new enemy types, weapons, class upgrades, and so on.

Player Classes[]
These are the new classes that will be replacing the old ones.[5]
Name | Image | Description |
---|---|---|
Sniper | The Sniper is the designated marksman and acts as the eyes and ears of the team. This class uses its enhanced mobility including jump jets to gain vantage points and perch high above, and is equipped with certain reconnaissance and firepower capabilities. This class evolved from the former Hunter class.[6] | |
Demolisher | The Demolisher acts as a demolitions trooper, rocket trooper, and grenadier; storming onto the battlefield with explosive weaponry and a formidable arsenal. Having expert knowledge in all things explosive, the Demolisher is able to blast their way through endless storms of Bugs. This class evolved from the former Bastion class.[7] | |
Guardian | The Guardian acts as a heavy weapons gunner and stands as a defensive juggernaut, equipped with hardened armor plates and formidable machine guns. This heavy infantry shock trooper is able to withstand the onslaught of Bugs and keep the bullets firing. This class evolved from the former Bastion class.[8] | |
Engineer | The Engineer is a support class that's responsible for building, maintaining, upgrading, and repairing various types of equipment, bases, and structures. They also handle logistics as well. This class evolved from the former Operator class.[9] | |
Medic | The Medic is a support class that's responsible for tending to and healing wounded troopers. This class evolved from the former Operator class.[10] | |
Ranger | The Ranger excels in speed, agility, mobility, close-quarters combat, and survival. They act as the premier boots-on-the-ground combatant, flexible and capable enough for any avenue of combat and also nimble enough for quick expeditionary actions. This class evolved from the former Hunter class.[11] |
Former Classes[]
In the previous version of the game there were three classes of troopers each with different roles and abilities.
Name | Image | Description |
---|---|---|
Hunter | This class served as Assault infantry, with their armored suits containing a Jump jet on the back similar to that later used on the Power Suit. Exceptional mobility cemented their role as rapid-response infantry amongst DSV forces, allowing them the tactical flexibility to respond to new threats on the fly. | |
Bastion | This class served as Heavy infantry, with a field barrier that could be quickly deployed to steady the trooper's aim. With their enhanced armor and heavy squad support weaponry, the Bastion was much more encumbered than other troopers and could struggle to keep formation in mixed-force units. | |
Operator | This class served as Support infantry, with their Medical Drone deploying medi-spray to wounded troopers or administering auto-revive protocols to incapacitated soldiers (including the drone's Operator). Troopers assigned to this class who deployed on Valaka were also equipped with special backpack storage units that were capable of transporting the canisters of Ore and Vayu gas the DSV were tasked with recovering. |
