Thirty years before the First Interstellar War, a tegument dropped in on Mars in an Arachnid attempt to colonise the planet. However, the planet's temperature was too cold, causing the Bug pod to impact the surface far faster than it was capable of. As a result, the entirety of the Arachnids consisting of many eggs and fully formed Warrior Bugs were killed.
Until this event, the United Citizen Federation had been unaware of the existence of the Arachnids and therefore sent the Recon Cruiser Cortez to the origin of the Bug pod discovered to be the planet Klendathu to establish first contact and study the species.[Issue needed]
Starship Troopers: Traitor of Mars
Mars is the central plot point of the film Traitor of Mars taking place above and on it.
The citizens of Mars, called Martians, have a very disconnected and uncooperative view of the War against the Bugs as they felt it was a solely Earth problem as if they should not be counted among humanity's overall fight for Earth. At some point, a Bug Meteor landed on Mars as claimed by the FedNet. If the incident was true, Amy Snapp did not take any action to avoid the "contamination". This caused a Bug invasion to take the planet by storm, forcing Mars into the fight whether they liked it or not. Amy let the Bugs there breed to create an excuse to blow the planet up as a whole by using a Q-Bomb, in order to boost her ratings and eliminate the Martians for their defiance. Her plan, however, was foiled by Carl Jenkins through Johnny Rico and Carmen, who not only stopped the Q-Bomb but showed they were wiling to fight for Mars, crushing both Amy's plans and her popularity in one fell swoop. Afterward, a full scale campaign was launched to retake Mars.
