The name or term "Kitten Smith" refers to more than one character or idea. For a list of other meanings, see Kitten Smith (disambiguation).
Private "Kitten" Smith was a trooper in the Mobile Infantry. He aspired to be a writer once his term was complete in the Federal Service, but was killed before this could happen.
History[]
Kitten was trained in the same unit as Johnny Rico in Camp Currie, and during their initial muster, could not restrain a smile and laugh as Career Sergeant Zim was dressing down the platoon. Unable to remove the smile, Zim sent Kitten on a punishment run with Corporal Bronski keeping pace.
Kitten would do well in training. At one point, while the entire platoon was showering in a co-ed lavatory, Kitten would try to get everyone to open up to him about their hopes and dreams in order to help him become a writer. He was present and devastated when Johnny received ten lashes thanks to his error as squad leader leading to Breckinridge's death. Later, after they have graduated and are at Ticonderoga Battle Station, he expresses to the galactic news network his eagerness to fight the bugs, and then suggests that all of their group of friends get matching Death From Above tattoos. Before getting their tattoos Johnny gets into a fight with Zander, and Kitten, Ace and Dizzy, lead him away from Zander who was lead away by Carmen, with Dizzy saying that Mobile Infantry and Fleet never mix.
During the Battle of Klendathu, when Johnny was about to be attacked by a Warrior Bug, Kitten turned and fired. Kitten was then maimed and killed by the Warrior Bug, much to Johnny's horror. Kitten was ripped in half and then had his his upper torso flung towards Johnny knocking him off his feet, but he quickly recovered and continue firing his rifle at the Warrior Bug, killing it. Notes[]
- The running scene of Kitten in the beginning of the boot camp is a reference to Al Jenkins from the novel.
