The Arachnid Quarantine Zone denotes a spatial region characterized by the densest concentration of the Arachnid race and serves as their primary origin. This area encompasses multiple habitable worlds, with at least one confirmed to have had no documented Arachnid presence before the establishment of the zone.
The Arachnid Quarantine Zone is situated on the far side of the Milky Way galaxy from Earth, yet is apparently accessible through a wormhole that terminates relatively close to Earth [citation needed]. This region was delineated by the Federation; however, there is at least one documented instance of human defiance against these directives, resulting in the establishment of a settlement within the zone. It is noteworthy that while Federation personnel and Navy vessels are prohibited from entering, civilians are not explicitly barred--although they are strongly advised against settling on the planets within the zone. It is probable that small, independent vessels venture into the zone for research purposes, as evidenced by a captive Warrior featured on FedNet, although it is presumed that these vessels are issued similar warnings as the aforementioned groups.
One incident occurred at Port Joe Smith, an independent colony founded within the Arachnid Quarantine Zone by a faction of Mormon extremists. While the colony sought to operate autonomously from the Federation, tensions arose when they endeavored to send individuals into Federation territory for educational purposes. The Federation mandated that these individuals undertake a course in History and Moral Philosophy. Notably, during a visit by Jean Rasczak, who was dispatched to conduct the course, the colony came under attack by the Arachnids, resulting in the loss of all inhabitants except for Jean and a handful of survivors.
In response to human encroachment into their territory, the Arachnids launched a pre-emptive strike, resulting in the devastating destruction of the entire city of Buenos Aires, Argentina, marking the commencement of the First Bug War. In retaliation, humanity initiated a strike on Klendathu, the home world of the Arachnids, aimed at mitigating the threat of further meteor attacks. Following the unsuccessful outcome of this endeavor, the Federation opted to undertake invasions of other worlds within the zone to gain deeper insights into the Arachnids, ultimately leading to the discovery of the Brain Bugs.
During the Battle of Hesperus, Psi Ops personnel under the leadership of General Hauser conducted an in-depth analysis of Arachnid specimens. Their objective was to ascertain the factors enabling a species with an average IQ of 35 to successfully colonize planets.
